Banarasi sarees are known for their intricate designs, luxurious silk fabric, and traditional weaving techniques. The manufacturing process of Banarasi sarees is a labor-intensive and time-consuming process, involving skilled artisans who use handloom machines to create the beautiful sarees.

Weaving Banarasi Dreams

A sense of the quintessence of Banarasi craftsmanship inspires our design aesthetic and our work. As designers, our constant challenge is to create something new while preserving an age-old design language

The weaves and products we offer are not only traditional, but they also embody a complex know-how sublimely realized in their artistry, authenticity, and workmanship.

As Rasm by Muskaan builds on Banarasi textile traditions, our design aesthetic pays close attention to the rich vocabulary.

The Prcess

The manufacturing process of Banarasi sarees is a time-honored tradition, passed down from generation to generation. The sarees are not only a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of India but also a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the weavers who create them.

  • Reeling

Reeling is an important step in the manufacturing process of Banarasi sarees. It involves the process of unwinding silk cocoons to obtain silk threads, which are then used for weaving the sarees. The silk threads obtained from reeling are then spun together to form a stronger and thicker thread, which is used for weaving the Banarasi saree. This process is called twisting. The quality of the silk thread obtained through reeling is crucial for the final quality of the Banarasi saree. The fineness, strength, and luster of the silk thread are all determined by the quality of the cocoons and the skill of the reeler.

  • Dyeing

Dyeing is a crucial step in the manufacturing process of Banarasi sarees. It involves the process of coloring the silk threads that will be used for weaving the saree. The dyeing process is done before the threads are wound onto bobbins and placed on the handloom machine. The silk threads are first boiled in water with a mordant, which helps the dye to adhere to the silk fibers. After the mordant has been applied, the silk threads are dipped into a dye bath. The silk threads are left in the dye bath until they have absorbed the desired amount of color. The longer the threads are left in the dye bath, the darker the color will be.

  • Weaving

Weaving is one of the most important steps in the manufacturing process of Banarasi sarees. It involves the process of interlacing silk threads on a handloom machine to create the intricate patterns and designs that make Banarasi sarees so unique. The weaving process starts with setting up the warp and weft threads on the handloom machine. The weaver then follows a pattern chart called a naksha, which specifies the design and pattern of the saree. The weaving of a Banarasi saree is a labor-intensive process that requires a high level of skill and attention to detail.

  • Iteration

Iteration is an essential part of the Banarasi saree manufacturing process. It involves the process of repeating certain steps in the production process to achieve the desired quality and finish of the saree. This process of iteration ensures that the Banarasi saree meets the high standards of quality and craftsmanship that it is known for.

  • Finishing

Finishing is the final step in the Banarasi saree manufacturing process. It involves the process of completing the saree by trimming the edges, adding borders, and adding any other embellishments or details. The attention to detail and commitment to excellence that is inherent in the finishing process reflects the skill and expertise of the artisans who create these beautiful sarees.
